Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why 1%?
The original idea behind calling the organisation 1% kinder was the sense that the world would be a better place if we were all able to be a tiny bit kinder. It only takes a little bit more kindness to make a big difference. Add to that, 1% of income is easy to calculate and it's easily justifiable as only a small amount every month. Add to that, the aim o 1% of GDP in donations per year as a goal is achievable and easily recognised as part of the brand.
  • How do you select the charities?
Choosing who to give to is a challenging task. Choosing one charity over others inherently means money goes somewhere and not elsewhere. Our main aim is to increase donations, and to make sure that money is being used effectively. We've chosen charities that represent a broad range of need in the Australians communities they operate in. Our main criteria have been Smaller charoites that might not get the coverage and marketing budget of larger well known. A well known and identifiable board. Other things
  • Can I cancel any time?
Yes you absolutely can. Log in to your account, go to "My Giving" then click on the Change my giving tab, scroll down and press Cancel Donation.
  • How much do I have to give?
Donation amount is completely up to you though we have a minimum of $1 a month. We recommend 1% of monthly income as it's easy to calculate and it doesn't feel like it's too much. (we understand that 1% may well be too much for many people, how much you give is entirely your choice)
  • Can I update my charities?
Yes you can change your charity selection at any time before a scheduled donation. Log in to you account, go to My Giving, click on the Change my Giving tab and follow the instructions to change your selection.
  • How does this work?
When you sign up to be 1% kinder we will ask you to select a number of charities or sectors that you'd like your donation to be distributed to. Each month your donation is automatically taken from your bank account. We then calculate the proportion of donations to each charity and donate on your behalf.
  • Is my donation tax deductable
Yes! OPK is a charity so your donations to us are all tax deductible. The benefit of giving to multiple charities though One Percent Kinder is that you'll only get 1 tax receipt.
  • Do I have to donate to be 1% kinder?
We understand that many people can't afford to give anything, especially as cost of living continues to rise. At the moment to sign up you have to be able to donate at least $1 a month. However in the future we are looking to add several different ways to engage and become part of the kindness community.
